John Bunyan’s words have inspired and influenced Christians for hundreds of years. When The Pilgrim’s Progress was written in 1678, John Bunyan was confined to a prison cell for proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and refusing to stop preaching even when the government demanded it.
In light of John Bunyan’s impact on Christians throughout the years, we want to share with you some of our very favorite John Bunyan quotes, and why we think his witness is so valuable.
He was committed to serving the Lord, even if it meant staying in prison:
“I will stay in prison till the moss grows on my eyelids rather than disobey God.”
He was well-acquainted with suffering and affliction:
“In times of affliction we commonly meet with the sweetest experiences of the love of God.”
He knew the value of humility, and relied on God:
“He who is down, needs fear no fall; He who is low, has no pride. He who is humble ever shall have God to be his guide.”
He believed in the saving power of God, and trusted in His promises:
“We fulfilled the law by Him, died by Him, rose from the dead by Him, got the victory over sin, death, the devil, and hell, by Him; when He died, we died, and so of His resurrection. Thy dead men shall live, together with My dead body shall they arise, saith He."
He knew that this life would be hard, but God would give him grace in all circumstances:
“It doth not say, the Lord gives gifts and glory, but the Lord gives grace and glory; and blessed is such a one, to whom the Lord gives grace, true grace; for that is a certain forerunner of glory.”
